France is the world's most popular tourist destination (78 million in 2006) boasting dozens of major tourist attractions, like Paris, Côte d'Azur (the French Riviera), the Atlantic beaches, the winter sport resorts of the Alps, the Castles of Loire Valley, Brittany, Normandy.Attractions include Paris, Versailles, Fontainebleau, Notre-Dame de Chartres, and Giverny. The fabled Côte d'Azur (Azure Coast, or Blue Coast) has become quite overbuilt and spoiled by tourism. Even so, the names of its resorts still evoke glamour: Cannes, St-Tropez, Cap d'Antibes, and St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

Whether you go out for dinner, eat in with friends or just picnic in the grounds of an old chateau, France has the right food on offer. There are also many activities you could kayak in the rivers of the Dordogne, ski in the Alps or sunbathe on the Atlantic coast. Golf and fishing are perennial favorites with visitors to France. In France there are four types of climate, each one linked to one of the assorted mountainous, coastal or inland areas. Cool winters and mild summers on most of the territory, and especially in Paris. Mild winters and hot summers along the Mediterranean. Mild winters and cool summers in the north west. Cold winters with lots of snow in the Mountainous regions.

Airport Information

The main international airport, Roissy - Charles de Gaulle (CDG), is likely to be your port of entry if you fly into France from outside Europe. Other airports have international destinations: Paris - Orly, Bordeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Toulouse have flights to cities in Western Europe and North-Africa.
