When it comes to holidays in Funchal, it's easy to explore on foot, so you'll have no trouble getting round the sights. There are historic buildings, including a 15th century cathedral and 18th century town hall. Slightly more up to date, the shopping centres and markets offer the opportunity to spend, spend, spend. If you prefer the sound of the sea to a ringing till, head west to Praia Formose. It's home to Funchal's only beach, which is made of large cobbles and black sand. If it's a meal you're after, you've come to the right place. Funchal is a natural harbour, so the marina is sprinkled with plenty of seafood restaurants. Here you can sample the fresh catches of the day. As the day fades and night begins, there's a sprinkling of clubs for the night owls, but it's mostly cafes and bars. They're the ideal place for a drink and a bite to eat in Funchal.
