Rent a cosy studio in the vineyard surrounded area of Banyuls sur Mer, by the Mediterranean, at the lower slopes of the Pyrenees that marks the border to Spain. The studio's raised position a few hundred yards from the Mediterranean, gives you a tremendous view from the terrace out over the marina and the sea. With just a couple of hundred yards to the beach and the boardwalk with its cafés, bars and restaurants you have all you need within walking distance. There you also find the town centre with everything from small specialist shops for fish, bread, fruit, meat, vegetables, wine, etc to a proper supermarket. Earlier Banyuls was a fishing village but is now more recognized for its wine and the hills around the city are covered with vineyards. Banyuls lies in the southeast part of the province Languedoc-Roussillon that is called Pyrénées-Orientales and is the French part of Catalonia that before 1642 belonged to Spain. Before Spain’s creation 1479, through the merging of Castile and The Crown of Aragon, Banyuls was a part of the latter. A mighty Mediterranean empire that reached over almost half of Spain, parts of Italy and Greece, Sicily, Majorca, Sardinia and Corsica. A bit north if Banyuls, in Collioure, is an old royal castle from this time and the area is marked by its Spanish roots. Language is both French and Catalan, and the village of Lliva is still Spanish although it is in the midst of France. The population is approx 6000, which multiplies during the tourist season. The centre is fairly small and is characterised by beautiful old houses and narrow streets. In the midst of the centre is a big square that often hosts performances. Across the boardwalk from the square lies Banyuls biggest beach. Here there also are a playground and the tourist information office whose personnel is very helpful and speaks good English. There are also a couple of bigger beaches some hundred yards to the north. South of the centre beach lies the marina and the Paris university observatory. Rental notes: Longer rental period, three weeks or more, gives a discount. Rent is to be paid in advance, at least 50 percent when booking and the rest one month before arrival, at the latest. The apartment is to be cleaned by the tenant at departure.

The studio lies on a slope down against the sea in an imaginatively built apartment compound, Les Hauts du Fontaule, built in 1992, with stairs and arches. The inside of the apartment is in white, with brown stone floor and consists of a room with kitchenette, toilet and a big terrace. The studio also has a private parking place. The toilet has a shower and a basin. The kitchen has a stove, microwave oven, coffee maker and a sink. There is plenty of china and there is usually some basic foods in the pantry, like spices, tea, pasta and rice. The tap water is excellent to drink. There is also a refrigerator with freezing compartment. The living room has a sofa bed for two persons and access to an inflatable extra mattress for two persons, with accompanying electrical pump. There are also a kitchen table with chairs, electronic piano and cd/cassette radio, plus a closet, drawers, bed table and a wardrobe. The terrace has a fine ocean view, which is sunlit from morning to evening, a table and four chairs with cushions. There is also a drying rack for towels and bathing clothes.
