This is a recently restored vine grower's house dating back several centuries. Although in the heart of the hamlet, it has a large mature garden and swimming pool. There is a fully equipped fitted kitchen, a large living room/ dining room with TV and DVD, 2 double bedrooms, 1 with an en-suite shower room, a twin room and large bathroom. There is a laundry room, downstairs WC and large garage. The living room opens by 2 French windows onto a terrace with a barbecue. Beyond are mature gardens with ample shade from trees and a pergola over a dining table. There is electric lighting in the garden which is most pleasant in the evenings in the summer months. Le Somail developed as a port on the canal du Midi and much of the traffic through it today comes by canal. It is a recognised beauty spot, popular with local people who go there at weekends to walk and enjoy its restaurants of which there are 3, as well as a piano bar. There is a number of artists in the area who exhibit in the village, and there is a world renowned antiquarian book seller and also a hat museum! The hamlet is surrounded by vines and other fruits, notably peaches, cherries and melons. Local produce is sold from a barn opposite the house. There is a barge on the canal which has the function of a corner shop, although there is a large supermarket a mile away in the neighbouring village of Saint Marcel. The area has a very rich history with many remains from the Roman period and grizzly tales of religious wars in the Middle Ages. The Cathar castles attract many tourists both for their history and the beauty of their locations on high hill tops. There are a number of wine routes within easy reach in the Minervois and Corbieres areas. The coast is less than 20km away, and water sports are available there as well as at local lakes and in the valley of the Orb which is popular with canoists.
